Percentage decrease shows how much a value has fallen relative to its original amount.
It is frequently used when analyzing price reductions, declining sales, weight changes, expenses, website traffic, and business performance.
Percentage Decrease Formula
Use:
Percentage Decrease = ((Original Value − New Value) ÷ Original Value) × 100
For example, imagine a product originally costs $200 but its price drops to $150.
The decrease is:
200 − 150 = 50
Divide this by the original price:
50 ÷ 200 = 0.25
Multiply by 100:
0.25 × 100 = 25%
The price decreased by 25%.
Example With Website Traffic
Suppose monthly traffic falls from 50,000 visits to 40,000.
The decrease is:
50,000 − 40,000 = 10,000
Then:
(10,000 ÷ 50,000) × 100 = 20%
Traffic decreased by 20%.

Percentage Decrease vs Percentage Difference
These terms should not always be used interchangeably.
Percentage decrease specifically compares a new, lower value with an original value. Percentage difference, on the other hand, can be used when comparing two values without necessarily treating one as the starting value.
