How to Calculate Tax Percentage

Understanding tax percentages can help you estimate the amount added to a purchase or deducted from an amount.

Calculating Tax Amount

Suppose an item costs $200 before tax and the applicable tax rate is 10%.

Calculate:

200 × 0.10 = 20

The tax amount is $20.

The final price is:

200 + 20 = $220

Finding the Tax Percentage

If you know the original amount and tax amount, use:

Tax Percentage = (Tax Amount ÷ Pre-Tax Amount) × 100

For example, if the pre-tax amount is $500 and the tax is $75:

(75 ÷ 500) × 100 = 15%

The tax represents 15% of the pre-tax amount.

You can use the Percentage Calculator for the percentage calculation itself.

Important Note

Actual tax rules vary by country, jurisdiction, product, and transaction. A percentage calculator can calculate the mathematics, but it does not determine which tax rate legally applies to a specific transaction
