Understand Every UTM Field
Reliable tracking depends on placing the right value in the right parameter. Confusing source and medium is a common mistake that fragments reports and makes channel comparisons unnecessarily difficult.
Apply the examples below with the English UTM Builder.
Source vs Medium
Source answers “Where did this visit come from?” Typical values include google, facebook, and newsletter. Medium describes how the visitor arrived, using values such as cpc, email, affiliate, or social.
Choose a Useful Campaign Name
The campaign parameter groups links belonging to one marketing initiative. Use a stable, descriptive value such as ramadan_2026 or product_launch. Keep it unchanged across ads that should appear together in one report.
A Practical Example
For a summer-offer email, use source=newsletter, medium=email, and campaign=summer_offer. To compare the top and bottom buttons, add content=header_button and content=footer_button.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Mixing Facebook, facebook, and fb for the same source.
- Putting a platform name in medium instead of source.
- Including personal or sensitive information in public URLs.
- Changing the campaign label midway through reporting.
